Uniportal Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (uVATS) in Thane

Uniportal VATS is video-assisted thoracic surgery performed through a single small incision, instead of the three or four cuts a standard VATS procedure typically uses. One cut means less post-operative pain, a smaller scar, and a faster return to normal breathing and activity for suitable patients.

What is Uniportal VATS?

Uniportal VATS is a minimally invasive surgical approach that involves performing thoracic surgeries through a single small incision, typically less than 4 cm in length (instead of 3 or 4 small incisions needed for traditional VATS. This technique utilizes a high-definition camera and specialized instruments to access and operate on the chest cavity, offering numerous benefits over traditional VATS and open surgery, including reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery.

  • Pleural / Lung Biopsy: Uniportal VATS is much less invasive for a predominantly diagnostic procedure like taking biopsy from pleura or from the lung for conditions which can’t be diagnosed by simpler tests
  • Lung Resection: Uniportal VATS is commonly used for lung resections, including lobectomies and segmentectomies, to treat lung cancer, infections, and other lung conditions. These procedures involve removing a part of the diseased lung which can be quite challenging due to the lung anatomy. Dr. Amol Bhanushali has received specialized training to be able to perform these difficult procedures by the Uniportal VATS technique, thereby causing lesser pain and discomfort to the patient
  • Bullectomy: Most cases of pneumothorax are due to rupture of bullae or blebs which are small air sacs on the lung surface. For a complete cure and to prevent recurrence, the patient needs to undergo a surgery called Bullectomy + Pleurodesis. This is done by Uniportal VATS at our center.
  • Decortication: This means removal of thickened pleura that prevents the lung from expanding again, following a long standing or complex pleural effusion (having septations or loculated pleural effusion) or following an empyema (infection in the pleural fluid). This also can be done by Uniportal VATS at our center.
